It sucks to live someplace you don’t like. What’s worse? Feeling as if your only options are to stay put or risk moving someplace you like even less.
You have the freedom to live anywhere. The problem is you don’t like where you’re living now. First, it was the traffic, then the high prices, the lousy weather... All of a sudden, you realized you're not happy living where you are.
You know it's time to make a change. But where should you relocate? You don’t want to waste valuable time and money on your search, and you sure don’t want to go through the hassle and expense of moving only to end up someplace you hate.
With so many possibilities, so much at stake, and no clear path forward, you wonder if – and how – you’ll ever find your happy place.
I understand how you feel, because I’ve been there.

Falling in, and out, of love with Austin.
I lived in Austin, Texas for 22 years. I met and married my first two husbands, raised my daughter, made lasting friendships, and started my nonprofit consulting business there. I loved Austin.
That is, until the cost of living went through the roof, traffic became unbearable, and the vibe went from laid back to impossibly hip. By the time my daughter graduated from high school, I was ready to leave. Austin no longer felt like home.
Little did I realize how challenging it would be to find a place that did feel like home!
A comedy of errors.
I went through three unsuccessful relocations in five years. The first two relocations were driven by life circumstances, but the third was driven by choice. It was exciting to have the freedom to choose, and I figured it would be easy to find the right place.
Except that it wasn’t. It was overwhelming and confusing. There were too many possibilities to consider, too much information to wade through and no system for vetting, analyzing and organizing the information so it could reliably guide our search.
The lack of a road map to guide our quest along with a judgment-cloudingly urgent desire to escape where we were living combined to create a perfect storm of costly relocation blunders that included:
- Wasting countless hours online researching with no clear focus or strategy;
- Deciding a place was a match based on unreliable, irrelevant information online;
- Placing our house on the market before leaving on the scouting visit (d’oh!);
- Spending $1,000+ on the scouting visit only to discover we didn’t like the place;
- Scrambling to get out of a contract on our house to avoid getting stranded;
- Getting stuck for another year someplace we were unhappy living;
- Repeating blunders 1 - 2, because what else was there to do;
- Taking a “find a place at all costs” approach to the next scouting visit;
- Rushing to buy a house in a small town without considering if we’d be happy there;
- Realizing within months of relocating that we’d made a giant mistake.
Finding the silver lining.
Determined to figure out what we could have done differently, I took a fresh look online to see if maybe, amidst the hysteria, I’d overlooked a resource or tool that would have made our search for a place to relocate to a breeze.
What I found was a confusing and overwhelming hodgepodge of community statistics, opinions and advice, along with research showing we were in good company: Most people choose where to live based largely on intuition – with mixed results.
Where we choose to live is not only one of the most important – and expensive – life decisions we make, it has a major influence on the other two most important decisions we make in our lifetimes: choosing a partner and a job.
Given the seminal role of place in our search for happiness:
- Why is finding the right place to live such a game of chance?
- Why are tools and resources readily available to help us find a compatible partner or job, but not a compatible place to live?
I knew there had to be a better way.
So I created Find Your Happy Place, a one-of-a-kind coaching program that takes the guesswork out of your search for a place to live that you love, saves you time and money looking, and gives you confidence you’ll thrive in the place you choose.
Find Your Happy Place helps you to smoothly and successfully navigate your search for a place you love using relocation planning tools and strategies adapted from a signature method I created over 25 years of finding and matching grant funders with nonprofits.
